Historical Background – 116th Mechanized Brigade:
The 116th Separate Mechanized Brigade was established in early 2023 as part of Ukraine’s large-scale effort to increase its military strength in preparation for new offensives against Russian occupying forces. It belongs to the newly formed “Offensive Guard” framework — a group of brigades trained for high-intensity combat and counteroffensive missions.
Formed with experienced veterans and newly trained recruits, the brigade was deployed in active combat zones within months of formation. It has been engaged in operations in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions, participating in Ukraine’s attempts to regain occupied territory.
As a mechanized infantry formation, the 116th Brigade utilizes armored vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and heavy support weapons to conduct combined arms operations. It plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s modern warfare tactics and is expected to remain a frontline formation in the ongoing conflict.
