Historical Background – 117th Territorial Defense Brigade:
The 117th Territorial Defense Brigade (military unit A7045) was established on April 13, 2018, in Sumy Oblast as part of Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its military reserve forces. The brigade comprises several Territorial Defense Battalions located in various districts of Sumy Oblast, including Sumy, Konotop, Romny, Shostka, Okhtyrka, and Stepanivka.
With the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, the brigade’s units were actively involved in the defense of key regions. Notably, in early March 2022, soldiers of the brigade captured Russian T-90A and T-72B3M tanks, as well as a UR-77 Meteorit mine-clearing vehicle. In April 2022, after the Russian withdrawal from northern Ukraine, soldiers of the brigade’s 150th Battalion captured additional Russian tanks abandoned near the Russia-Ukraine border.
On August 27, 2022, the brigade received its battle flag from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
The brigade participated in the Pokrovsk offensive in 2024 and the Kursk offensive from 2024 to 2025.
Throughout its service, the 117th Territorial Defense Brigade has demonstrated resilience and dedication, contributing significantly to Ukraine’s defense efforts during times of conflict.
