Historical Background – 119th Territorial Defense Brigade:

Formed in 2018, the 119th Territorial Defense Brigade (military unit A7169) is a regional defense formation of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, based in Chernihiv Oblast. Before the full-scale invasion in 2022, the brigade’s role focused on reservist training and protection of local infrastructure.

When the Russian invasion began, Chernihiv quickly became a frontline region due to its geographic location near the Belarusian and Russian borders. The brigade was instrumental in the Battle of Chernihiv, where it supported regular Armed Forces units in defending the city and surrounding areas. The defense effort successfully halted Russian advances, with the brigade engaging in both urban and forested terrain combat.

After the withdrawal of Russian forces from the northern front in spring 2022, the brigade remained active in defensive operations and local security. Several battalions were also redeployed to the eastern front to assist in the defense of key sectors like Bakhmut and Siversk.
