Historical Background – 120th Territorial Defense Brigade:

The 120th Territorial Defense Brigade (military unit A7048) was established on June 30, 2018, in Vinnytsia Oblast as part of Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its military reserve forces. Initially commanded by Colonel Valerii Kutsenko, the brigade underwent leadership changes and participated in large-scale exercises to enhance its operational readiness.

With the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, the brigade’s units were actively involved in the defense of key regions, including deployments near Bakhmut, Sloviansk, Izium, Soledar, Pisky, and Novobohdanivka. The 173rd Battalion, for instance, was stationed near Bakhmut during the summer for forty-nine days.

The brigade’s structure includes several Territorial Defense Battalions located in various districts of Vinnytsia Oblast, such as Ladyzhyn, Tulchyn, Zhmerynka, Nemyriv, Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Koziatyn, and Pultivtsi. Support units like engineering, communication, logistics companies, a mortar battery, and an anti-aircraft unit complement the brigade’s capabilities.

Throughout its service, the 120th Territorial Defense Brigade has demonstrated resilience and dedication, contributing significantly to Ukraine’s defense efforts during times of conflict.
