Historical Background – 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade:

The 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, known as the “Zakarpattia Brigade,” is one of Ukraine’s most distinguished military units. Its lineage traces back to the 1st Turkmenistan Rifle Division, formed in 1922. Over the decades, the unit underwent several reorganizations, becoming the 128th Guards Motor Rifle Division during the Soviet era.

After Ukraine’s independence, the division was reorganized into the 128th Mechanized Division in 1992 and later transformed into the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade in 2013.

The brigade has participated in various international missions, including peacekeeping operations in Iraq, Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the former Yugoslavia.

During the War in Donbas, the brigade played a crucial role in the Battle of Debaltseve. In the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 128th Brigade has been instrumental in several key operations, including the defense of Zaporizhzhia and the 2022 Kherson counteroffensive.

The brigade is renowned for its effective use of mountain warfare tactics, resilience in challenging terrains, and commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
