Historical Background – 61st Mechanized Brigade:
The 61st Mechanized Brigade was established in 2015 in response to Ukraine’s need for versatile, rapid-deployment forces during the Russian aggression in Donbas. Originally designated as a light infantry/jaeger formation, the unit trained in northern woodland regions and participated in exercises for Arctic warfare capability.
In 2022, as part of reforms and modernization, it was upgraded to a mechanized brigade and received the honorary name “named after Prince Volodymyr the Great” — a symbol of statehood and historical continuity.
During the full-scale Russian invasion, the brigade has participated in defensive operations, reconnaissance missions, and stabilization tasks across Ukraine’s northern and eastern sectors. Its flexibility and resilience make it a valuable asset within Ukraine’s Ground Forces.
