Historical Background – 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade:

The 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, known as the “Black Zaporozhians,” is one of Ukraine’s most distinguished military units. Its lineage traces back to the 29th Rifle Division formed in 1941, which was later redesignated as the 72nd Guards Rifle Division in 1943 for its exemplary performance during World War II.

Post-war, the unit underwent several transformations, becoming a motor rifle division and eventually, after Ukraine’s independence, the 72nd Guards Mechanized Division of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In 2002, it was reorganized into the 72nd Mechanized Brigade.

The brigade has been actively involved in major conflicts, including the War in Donbas and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Notably, it played a crucial role in the defense of Kyiv, engaging in battles at Antonov Airport, Moshchun, and Brovary.

In recognition of its valor and historical significance, the brigade was awarded the honorary title “Black Zaporozhians” in 2017, drawing inspiration from the Ukrainian People’s Army cavalry unit known for their black uniforms and fierce independence.

The brigade’s emblem and motto encapsulate its enduring spirit and commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
