Historical Background – 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade:

The 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade, known as the “Tavrian Brigade,” is one of Ukraine’s most distinguished military units. Its lineage traces back to the 40th Air Assault Brigade formed in 1979, which was later reorganized into the 40th Airborne Brigade in 1990.

After Ukraine’s independence, the unit became the 79th Airmobile Regiment in 1999 and was reorganized into the 79th Airmobile Brigade in 2007.

The brigade has been actively involved in major conflicts, including peacekeeping missions in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone. It played a crucial role during the War in Donbas, notably in the defense of Donetsk Airport, where its soldiers were nicknamed “Cyborgs” for their resilience.

In the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the 79th Brigade has been instrumental in various key battles, including the defense of Kurakhove and operations in the Donetsk Oblast.

The brigade’s emblem and motto encapsulate its enduring spirit and commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
