The double-headed eagle, crowned and holding a scepter and orb, represents sovereignty and power. This insignia traces its origins to the Byzantine Empire and was adopted as a symbol of Russian authority during the reign of Ivan III in the 15th century. Today, it is an official emblem of the Russian Federation.
