Historical Background – Separate Presidential Brigade:

The Separate Presidential Brigade named after Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (military unit A0222) traces its origins to January 2, 1992, when it was established as the 1st Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine in Kyiv. This formation was based on the 290th Separate Motorized Rifle Novorossiysk Red Banner Regiment of the Internal Troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In 1995, the regiment was reorganized into the 24th Separate Brigade of the National Guard, incorporating several battalions, including units from Zhytomyr and Vysoka Pich. By December 1999, following the disbandment of the National Guard, the brigade was transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and restructured as the Independent Kyiv Regiment of the President of Ukraine.

The brigade holds the honorary title named after Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, reflecting its historical connection to the 1st Ukrainian Cossack Regiment of the same name from the era of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

With the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, the Presidential Regiment expanded into a brigade to meet the increased operational demands. Units of the brigade have been actively involved in the defense of Kyiv and have participated in combat operations in various eastern regions, including Kharkiv, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Vuhledar.

The brigade uniquely combines ceremonial responsibilities—such as the Honor Guard Battalion and military orchestra for state events—with active combat roles on the front lines, embodying both tradition and resilience in Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
