Historical Background – 76th Guards Air Assault Division:
The 76th Guards Air Assault Division, based in Pskov, traces its origins back to the 157th Rifle Division, formed during World War II. Reorganized as an airborne unit, it became one of the premier VDV (Russian Airborne Forces) formations. In 1944, for its bravery in the liberation of Chernigov, the division received the honorary title “Chernigovskaya,” and later, the Order of Suvorov for successful military operations.
Throughout the post-Soviet era, the 76th Division remained a core strike element of the Russian airborne forces. Units from the division have reportedly been involved in operations in Chechnya, Georgia (2008), Crimea (2014), Donbas (2014–present), and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine starting in 2022.
The division’s personnel are known for their advanced training, mobility, and active participation in Special Military Operation (SMO) combat zones, making this patch symbolic among VDV and collectors of modern Russian military gear.
